Eco-friendly NYK Coal Carrier Honored as 2012 Ship of the Year
Soyo, an NYK-owned coal carrier, has been selected as the 2012 “Ship of the Year” by the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE). An awards ceremony was held on July 25, and Mitsuhiko Sunouchi, the general manager of NYK’s Technical Group was presented with the recognition by JASNAOE.
JASNAOE’s “Ship of the Year” award has been presented every year since 1990 to a Japan-built vessel that the society considers to be the most technically advanced, well-designed, and socially conscious. The NYK Group’s cruise ship Crystal Harmony (current name: Asuka II) received the society’s first “Ship of the Year” award in 1990, and NYK-Hinode Line Ltd.’s two module carriers Yamatai and Yamato were recognized with special awards in 2010.
Soyo was honored for its innovative air-lubrication system and its proven impact on CO2 reduction. This new air-lubrication system reduces CO2 emissions by taking some of the main engine scavenging air (combustion air) from the main engine’s turbocharger and leading it to the vessel’s bottom to reduce the frictional resistance between the vessel’s bottom and the seawater. A system featuring this scavenging air bypass is expected to be effective in reducing CO2 on large vessels having deep drafts.
Yamatai and Yamato have similar air-lubrication systems, and were actually the world’s first vessels involved in overseas transport to have such a system permanently installed. The NYK Group is currently looking to equip car carriers with this eco-friendly system.
The system was jointly developed by NYK, Oshima Shipbuilding Co. Ltd., and the Monohakobi Technology Institute, an NYK Group company, in cooperation with the National Maritime Research Institute. System development was subsidized through Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism’s “Support for Technology Development from Marine Vessels for Curtailing CO2” project, among others.*
The NYK Group will continue to encourage initiatives that address climate change by striving to install this system on other types of vessels.

Asuka II cruiser
With the departure of Asuka II (NYK), a luxury japanese ship, today at 17, a new cruiser season will close in Buenos Aires, with very positive numbers: this year reached 425,000 City passengers, 22.5% more than last year.
As reported in the Entity of Tourism Buenos Aires, in the season came 33 ships, which made landfall 161 times, 20% more than in the previous season.
“The increasing number of cruise passengers and landfalls are reflected in our City, which is part of a world trend. Estimates of specialists speak of more than 19.5 million cruise passengers worldwide for next year”, said Hernán Lombardi, president of Ente Tourism and Minister of Culture of the City. For 2013, it is estimated to reach 500,000 cruise passengers to arrive in Buenos Aires, in fact already confirmed 168 landfalls.
According to the survey conducted by the Tourism Observatory of the Ente, 19% of the cruise passengers were residents of Argentina and 81% overseas visitors. Of the foreigners, 49.9% were from neighboring countries and 26.1% in Europe. Meanwhile, 14.8% came from the United States and 6.4% of other American countries.
The cruise industry is a significant economic impact on the economy of Buenos Aires. The average cost of the cruise passengers was $ 802.38.
The season began on November 30, with the arrival of MSC Opera cruise with 2,000 passengers who had sailed in Venice.
Meanwhile, Asuka II reached Benito Quinquela Martín terminal yesterday morning and was greeted by a tango show organized by the Government of Buenos Aires, by the duo Federico Mizrahi and Luis Longhi, accompanied by Christine Brebes´ violin and Myriam Santucci on cello.
This is a super luxury boat, 6 star considered. The cruise itinerary lasts 100 days and goes around the world visiting South Africa, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, the Caribbean and the U.S.
It gets to Buenos Aires every ten years
For the highest category the trip costs US$ 80,000. The same 569 passengers departing from Japan make the entire trip, and no new travelers go aboard along the way. Also traveling 459 crew. In total, 1,200 people can be onboard this ship.
The growth of the cruise industry in recent years was so important that motivated the remodeling of the terminal, which opened in 2011 after an investment of more than US$ 25 million.
Ecological balance in view of NYK
WITH OWN DEVELOPMENT
On its maiden voyage, docked at Puerto Nuevo the “NYK Furano,” its technology initiative enables lower fuel consumption.
The ship’s captain Anuj Austin Maliakkal, with NYK Group managers Multimar, Julio Cesar Gonzalez Badié, David Craig and Leonardo Alberich.
On its maiden voyage, the “NYK Furano” passed through Buenos Aires. The interesting thing about this ship is its fuel saving mode with reduced consumption of fuel oil, from research and technological development of the NYK Group.
One of its secrets is in the structure of the hull, built with high strength steel “YP47”. This decreases the weight and reduces fuel consumption.
The ship´s rotation is Singapore, Hong Kong, Pusan, Shanghai, Ningbo, Shekou, Hong Kong, Singapore, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Buenos Aires, Montevideo, Navegantes, Paranagua, Santos, and Rio de Janeiro.
On the occasion, the captain of the ship, Anuj Maliakkal Austin, received a commemorative plaque from the hands of the managers of NYK Group Multimar, Julio Cesar Gonzalez Badié, David Craig, and Leonardo Alberich.
Hibrid energy
The NYK company also began testing to verify the effects of a joint development of hybrid power systems for the propulsion of ships. It is an energy production system that combines solar energy with the energy obtained from a conventional power station.
The power generation of photovoltaic panels on the car carrier Auriga Leader are being tested since its completion on December 19, 2008.
The tests showed that providing a stable source of energy to solar panels is difficult because a small change in climate has a significant influence on the amount of energy generated.
Moreover, the company received the first Bulk Carrier with hybrid turbocharger. It went further to reduce CO2 emissions.
Is a 180,000 DWT vessel, “Shin Koho”. It is the first carrier in the world that has a hybrid turbocharger, which was developed in conjunction NYK, the Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI), Universal Shipbuilding Corporation and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
