Japanese label company is consolidated in the market
El Cronista Comercial
Suplemente Transport & Cargo
Statistics show that only one of 400 companies that are based in Argentina manages to survive 20 years. If the firm also operates in a category as beaten as foreign trade and logistics, merit is even greater. Who has two decades in the market is Multimar. Patrick Campbell, the creator and president, brings 35 years of experience in the maritime sector.
“From before the creation of Multimar two decades ago, he had contact with the Japanese line Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), even I did a workout that was linked to succession planning in Latin America and to project the long term. We opened in the 1995 because it coincided with the start of the first fully containerized NYK Line, the Good Hope Express (GEX), a new consortium that came to Argentina. They wanted to leave traditional agency structures to open a business unit to another concept “he told Transport & Cargo Patrick Campbell, president of NYK Group Multimar.
The opening date also coincided with the process of privatization and decentralization port lived Argentina along with the great logistical change meant deepening the waterway and signage Santa Fe ocean.
“There was a new concept, and went all the technology of data transfer. It was an important cultural change and as an organization had to be adapted. When we opened Multimar we were about 30 people and are 120 more diversified and nationwide today” Campbell recalled.
At its inception, the firm focused on the business line and container service. Then the activity was diversified to include other items such as cars, logistics, fruit, bulk carriers and cruise ships.
“We were able to consolidate a company with a good service concept, guided by a clear strategy based on the eastern or Japanese philosophy, with sharp concepts of customer service. It was possible to implement a whole new terminology processes and protocols were not used to use in Argentina. Luckily the people who started in 95 is still with us. The strength of Multimar is growing up with staff who remained in the company. Today we have a staff well prepared and positioned us well mature market ” , said Campbell.
Vote of confidence
In 2007, a landmark to consolidate the NYK Group Multimar change occurred.
“At the time was an act of support and trust of managers of NYK. All shipowners were positioned in South America and what they did was take the best people and open their own structures. Ours, I think it was the first case where the owner pondered the existence of an added value in people and in the name Multimar. They did a process of joint integration that the experience works very well. At this stage we improved and matured a lot as a company, because even entered the harder the Nippon cultivates values, codes of ethics, anti-corruption, and social responsibility. Everything was creating a company culture. To us gave us a tranquility, a qualitative step forward and allowed us to grow, “noted Patrick Campbell.
Currently, the group is satisfied with Multimar, Plate Borkers and Yusen Logistics. Multimar also has offices in Paraguay, Uruguay, Mendoza, Cordoba and San Juan.
“The office of Uruguay has had a tremendous growth and has diversified barges, bulk, and wood chips. Along with Paraguay’s office, are important pillars for us,” he stressed the official.
In recent years the group NYK Multimar should exercise caution in an increasingly managed trade.
“As in the 80s there was private investment in terminals on the Parana River, and in the 90 decentralization and port investment over the waterway, the last years were stagnant. We are on a plateau because of bureaucratic obstacles to trade do not coincide with modern business shipping today. We want to be firm without papers or bureaucracy, and we found just the opposite. We have ideas growth but only if the environment is with us, another climate, and predictability in the long term. Today we are no criteria uniforms, and from national, provincial and port, each one by his side. We did not grow in volume or in containers or export. We are stuck in the markets and we need investment in construction and infrastructure. The inflation problem, and the tax burden conditional on companies because it is difficult to project when there are no clear and specific numbers. You can not grow by intuition. We very much hope that Argentina from next period in 2016 change course, growing regional economies, stocks are released, DJAI and other restrictions that complicate this business. We know that there is great interest to invest in Argentina, and several port projects in the pipeline, but we are waiting for the end of this stage, “said Patrick Campbell.
NYK to Implement New Employment Scheme for Japanese Seafarers
NYK has decided to implement a new employment scheme in which Japanese seafarers will be engaged to work only on vessels and not within NYK’s offices.
Japanese seafarers have traditionally been well regarded the world over for their teamwork and skills, generally developed through state-of-the-art education and training programs provided at renown maritime education institutions. And seafarers having specialized knowledge and skills are becoming more needed as NYK becomes more active in its LNG (liquefied natural gas) and offshore businesses.
NYK is thus making this move to fill positions that will require seafarers with particular technical expertise. This new work-style will also allow Japanese seafarers to settle in areas of their choosing and contribute to local communities. The employment of several officers and engineers is currently scheduled to take place from April or October 2016.
NYK will continue to secure and train technically advanced non-Japanese seafarers, who professionally man the bulk of NYK’s fleet and will continue its efforts to enhance its employment methods to ensure stable transport services.

Uruguay still stands offer a wide port
The Sailing Center has a new executive committee Uruguay. After the elections last May 29, Alejandro Gonzalez, took office for a period of two years. Except for some members, there is a history and collective memory work who were part of the previous presidency of Mario Baubeta. While we usually think only in Montevideo, the Uruguayan port range is much wider.
Nueva Palmira recorded a big movement and diversification, in terms of goods, from cellulose, grain to cars, and transshipment center with final destination Paraguay. Fray Bentos, but has less activity, has positioned itself in recent years in the management of barley, citrus fruits and the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. Port Paysandu receiving dock investments today is also within the trade route in the country with much national cabotage and container movement Montevideo and then change trains, told Transport & Cargo Alejandro Gonzalez, who, in turn, is responsible for the Agency Maritime Multimar in Uruguay.
President Navigation Center, stressed the important international investment that takes place in the Montes del Plata harbor, with export volumes projected at 1.3 million tons per year, which will provide 4 or 5 monthly ship calls thinking of loading cellulose over everything that can possibly go out containers. It also highlighted an interesting investment in national fleet with the addition of barge and tug fleet circulating under Uruguayan flag.
Gonzalez Montevideo defined as multipurpose port where the activities have to be analyzed by business segment. This terminal receives many vessels for shipment of bulk and has positioned itself well in cargo soy to alleviate some delays at the port of Nueva Palmira, and car carrier vessels.
CURRENT PICTURE
In terms of containers, the current picture has to do with an import low cam that records and exports growing at a steady pace along the transshipment of Paraguay. The problem is with transshipments from Argentina, which have fallen significantly after 1108. Our numbers available indicate that low was 88.4% in terms of TEUs. That remaining 12% is basically import to final destination ports of Buenos Aires and Parana. Gonzalez said.
According to the head of the Center Navigation all export cargo flow was established and constituted a supply chain that worked very well. This positive assessment was not only ours but also for the Argentine exporters. Following this provision had to think of a plan B. Most of the volume was derived in southern Brazil, and another perhaps gone to the port of Buenos Aires. According to our analysis, delays, increased costs and loss of competitiveness in some way have been assumed by the exporter occurred. Also, for us, the fact of not receiving the full export of Argentina, cut off supplies of empty containers to load those ports. Against this background, the Uruguayan side are trying to find public and private solutions that allow us some predictability and the ability to buffer the effects.
The Sailing Center is the flagship institution of the sector; gathers prestigious and historic companies and some that were created and joined their corporate body. Work with technical, legal, external consultants, and has developed a few years ago a comprehensive statistical system that keeps them informed about the behavior of traffic, and shipping lines.
Alejandro Gonzalez rescued the good relationship between the institution and other business chambers and maritime authorities, port and national in its range of options.
With the National Port Authority have a monthly formal meeting with an open agenda where we have issues, progress, concerns, and furthermore, our General Manager, Leticia Gallareta maintains daily contact acknowledged Gonzalez.By Agustín Barletti. Enviado especial – Montevideo
